A rare if not unique beaker made to celebrate Oxford’s 1000th year. One side cast with OXFORD MILLENARY and two figures holding high an hour glass, the left hand figure being that of Alfred the Great holding a shield dated 912, the right hand figure representing learning and holding a shield dated 1912.

The other side cast with a view of the spires of Oxford and the legend FORTIS EST VERITAS (Truth is Strong) the motto on the coat of arms of Oxford. The base struck with the name of the Oxford silversmith’s Payne and Sons established in 1790 and still in business
