A Rare Half Pint 18th Century Mug engraved “Jos Hicks, Swan, Clapton” engraved within an oval wrigglework border. The tongue top handle with ownership triad H I L. WR verification on side. Also engraved with a large No.4 and under the base with the dated 1797

 

This tavern is referred to in Charles Dickens’  collection of tales “Sketches by Boz” in the short story “Mr. Minns and his Cousin”:

 

18th century Half pint mugs are of considerable rarity.
